Be More Careful

Hey all,

Well I'm pretty pissed today, why? Cause my laptop got a bloody virus! Bloody Hell! A suggestion to you all, never use pureTnA ever. That seems to be where I got the virus, I could be wrong but it seems to be the likely place. Anyways the good news is that I've saved most of my edits. I'm gonna have to redownload all the raws and scripts again which is not a problem. The problem is re-editing some of the stuff that wasn't saved. Guess I'm gonna be spending a lot of time on editing for the next few days. This is really only a minor setback thanks to the external HD. Either way though I'm pissed still and I'm in no mood to hear crap from people and stuff like that so try not to piss me off today or tomorrow. I know, life's a bitch but seriously I'm never going on torrent sites that have pop-ups like pureTnA's site (Even though I put the pop-up blocker on high) ever again. I'm gonna have to find a new site to download from. I actually wasn't planning on posting this in all honesty but I figure this would be a good way to just vent out. Anyways people, next release will still be tomorrow since the blog must go on. I hope non of you ever have to go through the experience of getting a Virus and getting fucked in your ass by it. I swear if Viruses were a physical existance I would take a hammer and beat the shit out of it. I would unleash more rage then anything in this world. ok ok I'm done talking.

Bloody Hell!

Sorry to hear man! Love your work :) All the best with the recovery and stuff!

What antivirus were you using? I use avast and go to PureTNA; never had a problem so far. Just a ton of virus warnings.

Damn, you got the same thing I did last year...

Sites with a sh*tload of pop-ups tend to install unknown programs in your computer if you close them...

Sorry for your lose...

sorry to hear that, I just recovered from a Virus myself so I know what you're going through.

You should use firefox and NoScript add-on. They'll prevent almost pop-up or anything from untrust, ad etc site :)

@Anonymous 1
I use F-Secure which comes with the laptop. Pretty basic but has been pretty good for the most part up until last night. Go figure, PureTnA is fucked. I hate when sites have so much pop-ups and viruses which they should get rid of.

@Anonymous 2
I really don't like firefox, never been use to it really. What is this NoScript add-on? Can I use it for internet explorer and where do I get it?

Tg said...

F-secure is ok I guess, but kaspersky is better.

Also, use anything but IE, IE always has a serious security hole ( Google just announc not many day ago about IE exploit. German give warning to citizen about how suck IE is. French will follow german shortly) . Chrome and opera are very fast and responsive. Firefox is still the best when it come down to functionality.

and no, you can't use noscript in IE, it's firefox's extension. Noscript can disable any javascript/flash on webpage ( which shutdown alot of ad/banner)

@Fayt Leingod: No, but then again the pop-up blocker on IE 7-8 is rather descent.
If ANYTHING... avoid using IE 6 downward.

I wish I could say that being infected from a virus from PureTnA was a shock. It's not. The place itself is as seedy as PirateBay, so (especially for windows users) I'd be prepared before touching the place (i.e.: Updated Anti-virus, Updated firewall, a pop-up/script blocker of some kind... A DIFFERENT Browser of some kind [IE8, Fx 3.x, Chrome 2.x... something other than IE 6 and I would avoid IE 7 unless you can't]).

Still sucks, sorry to hear it.

Try Cheggit as an alternative to PureTNA. It often closes registrations temporarily, but they are open now. http://cheggit.net/

Don't use IE.

srsly just don't...

currently its so bad, that visiting a site wich useses publically avaible code is going to infect your Computer...

use a different Browser and after 15 to 30 min you won't want to go back ;)

Ouch, sorry to hear that.

I have to echo the others on this - Firefox offers virtually the same browsing experience as IE, except without several glaring and nigh-irreparable security holes. Having add-ons like NoScript, Adblock Plus, and whatnot really helps the browsing experience. And yes, a better antivirus would probably be a good investment.

Wise of you to have a backup HD handy.

Ouch! I myself got raped hard a while back (2 1/2 years, I think) by ptna while using IE and Norton; it cost me many hours of rebuilding. I now use Firefox and Avast; no problems at all.
Nicely, the learning curve for these is easy, and both are free.

Best wishes during your recovery.

I suggest Firefox. Addon NOSCRIPT for firefox and AVG free, i usse those 3 things and im set.

NEVER use Internet Explorer , your just asking for Visuses with that POS.

Oh man, you suck.

Just kidding of course :D

Everybody advises to use Firefox, well, personally even if I'm also a firefox user, I'll try to be less of a fanboy.
Simply said : don't use a browser still representing to this day 70% of the browser market and for which virus developers have had decades to become competent and apt at using any known and potential vulnerabilities.

If you're the lazy type and you don't want to add extensions, Chrome and Safari will do the job for you. Chrome especially is wicked fast.

If you can accept a minuscule learning curve and a much slower startup, firefox and its zillion addons offers you more security and tweaking pleasure.

That said, a virus unkonwn to your antivirus softwrae will be a pain in the ass one way or another, you would still have ended being fucked up.

Maybe you could try empornium.us, they have pretty decent porn too, I prefer them over puretna.

This is something too time consuming and I've been too lazy to do it, but I've got a few friends that use virtualization to protect themselves. They've used microsoft virtual pc (freeware) to install a new windowsXP on a part of their harddisk, and whatever happens to the virtual OS can't affect the rest of the system. They use it to perform "risky" activities (like testing keygens taken from torrents, browsing websites most likely to contain trojans and other shit), and only in the end, they import the wanted files to the "real" system (microsoft virtual PC allows such an operation). If you're a security freak you might want to give it a thought.

Good luck getting back on your feet, man !

Hmm...Puretna, huh...And I just came from that site. Although, they did mention that they were having some issues with popups and they were trying to fix it. There was an Important Announcement about it.

Its not so much the site thats the issue, its the advertisements that do it. As mentioned before Firefox with noscript & adblock will save you many hassles.

I used to get viruses every couple of months. I'd need to clean them off or in bad cases reinstall. So I switched to Ubuntu Linux around three years ago and haven't ever had a computer-related problem since.

To stop ads (with approved javascript) from loading trojans/virus, use realtime detection. The paid subscription antivirus have that, but so does the freeware Avast.

Also, you may supplement the antivirus with anti-spyware tools that catch things the antivirus program doesn't normally deal with. Tools like Spybot Search & Destroy have a realtime blocker called Teatime (choose to enable it during installation).

I use both Avast and Spybot and have no problems. Both have caught problems at times before they became problems.

Sorry for your lost,Man!Try using Avira Antivirus ,its got 95% detection rate of all the antivir outthere.Or use a Virtual Machine when dowloading.

I use Comodo Internet Security for my AVG, and Malwarebytes for anti-malware. Run those both once a week, then run Kaspersky's Online AVG once a month just in case Comodo/Mbytes missed any. I've had too many false positives with AVG/Avira to recommend those.

I also run Firefox with No-Script and Adblock. I haven't found anything combo as good on either IE or Chrome. Even Safari's glitterblocker isn't as effective.

Also, what exactly where you downloading? I find torrent is too risky these days if you're not part of an invite-only group (hdbits), and that ddl stuff (irc, pdshare) is usually the best. If you're dling stuff I usually do, I can give you some decent places.

GL getting your system back up, bro.

After I got hit by a trojan a few years back, I tested out all the major AV vendors software. Not the most scientific of tests, I'll admit, but my tests determined that Kaspersky was the best. Nothing gets by it. Not even zero-day stuff. The flip side is that its a resource hog and occasionally will screw up valid software. The screw ups are easily fixed tho.

Use: Eset Smart Security (NOD32) get it from: http://nsanedown.com/

btw, if you are using kaspersky, better not to run them at the same time(start-up). (since both of them are enemies)

As a PC repair tech I highly recommend Kaspersky Internet Security. I sell it to my customers and in the past two or three years, only one person has gone back to their previous anti-virus, and they didn't even have any complaints about Kaspersky. I also use Kaspersky to clean up computers that other protection suites let stuff through on and my systems have never had anything get through. You can download a free 30 day trial at http://usa.kaspersky.com/trials/home-users/internet-security/ and you don't even have to enter a real email address. Oh yea, I also tell everybody to use Firefox with Ad-block Plus and a couple other addons.
